In February 2016, the US passed new legislation that effectively bans the import of goods derived from slavery. Apparently, enforcement of the new law, will build on information and data gathered by the US Department of Labour, listing goods and countries that reportedly use forced labor. Given that the US were ahead of the UK with the introduction of California Transparency in the Supply Chains Act, we are left wondering whether ultimately this is the direction that the UK Modern Slavery Act, will take too? If so, companies need to proactively engage with their supply chains over the next few years to make sure they are tackling modern slavery, or risk their business.
